Van Compass is a US-based company specialising in off-road suspension systems for Mercedes Sprinters. Since 2015, they have been designing and manufacturing a wide range of suspension kits that help drivers achieve smooth, comfortable rides on and off-road.
In this post, we'll discuss our two most popular van suspension packages for 4x4 Sprinters: the 2.3 kit and 4.3 kit from Van Compass.
Note, these kits are not considered lift kits. They are purely a ride improvement addition. The additional leaf springs as part of the 4.3 kit do help to reduce sag in the rear, "lifting" the rear back to close to original ride height.
Lifting a Sprinter is not an easy task with Australian Vehicle Standards.
The Van Compass lift kits are a body lift style, which requires engineering sign off in accordance with VSB14. However a lot of engineers are hesitant to engineer a Sprinter body lift due to the increased roll over potential. This is a whole other discussion, but we generally avoid lift kits on Sprinters.
The Stage 2.3 System uses fully adjustable front and rear Fast Adjust shocks paired with the Sumo Spring front bump stop upgrade.
This system is perfect for lightweight vans that do not require a rear spring upgrade, or heavier vans that have already had a leaf spring adjustment.
We love the stage 2.3 kit because of Fast Adjust shocks, which allow owners to quickly soften or firm up their suspensions based on driving conditions. These shocks have a massive range of compression which is adjusted using the accessible Fast Adjust knob. Position one–the softest setting– is best used for rough dirt road travel, while position 2 is our go-to setting for everyday road travel. Position 3 is the firmest setting and provides the maximum amount of stability–ideal for windy highway travel.
The best part? All of this is achieved without increasing the vehicle ride height. This means that the factory geometry is retained, which helps limit fuel consumption and side sway.
The Stage 4.3 System is our most popular suspension package.
In addition to the Fast Adjust Shocks and front Sumo Spring, it features the Mini Leaf Spring pack which corrects rear sag on midweight and heavyweight vans.
The Mini Leaf Spring pack can be installed in just one day, which makes the 4.3 system the most time efficient, comprehensive suspension kit we offer - no need to wait 2+ weeks to have your rear leaf springs reset.
We strongly recommend adding Baja Brackets to any Van Compass suspension upgrade, as they help alleviate one of the Sprinter’s shortcomings in off-road travel. The Mercedes Sprinters have a single shear upper shock bolt, which is suitable for daily drives on pavement but can cause issues for Sprinters off-road. The addition of the Baja Brackets supports the upper shock from both sides, eliminating the fulcrum effect that can lead to premature failure of the shock bolts.
Adapt Option. The 2.3 and 4.3 kits can both be upgraded to include remote controlled adjustment from the driver's seat. With the push of a button, drivers with the 2.5 and 4.5 kits can soften their shocks when they encounter bumpy terrain. The E-ADAPT system in these packages also includes an “auto” setting, which adjusts the suspension automatically based on road conditions.

For those who like their fish fresh from the ocean floor, they're often caught here - rock cod, bream and jewfish are just some species that thrive near this beachside community. Prawning doesn't get much better than right off these shores either: there are scattered inlets all around for great paddy dipping opportunities where you could find yourself reeling up some shrimp after only minutes spent down. The mountain sits at 2,000 metres and the summit offers 360-degree views far beyond one could imagine. This 4WD track has plenty of room to roam for both experienced and inexperienced enthusiasts alike. It would be a great day for an adventure. You can brave the hike, while also taking in all the beautiful sights. Don’t worry though - we promise it’s smooth sailing from there! You’ll have a good chance to spot wallabies on your way up too (if that happens, you can thank us later!). Down in the park itself, your vehicle will haul you along tracks filled with twists and turns, leading to the ultimate view.
If you’re curious to explore closer to home, then this track is only a five-hour drive from Sydney and has some of the best 4WD tracks in Australia. The Caves Road will take you up through the Wolgan Valley and into the 4WD caves at Mt Solitary to see some breathtaking sights. We’ve been told that this adventure offers something for every skill level with an exciting array of rocks, crests, climbs and descents that are filled with an explosion of colour to appreciate as you ride along. There are also several campsites along the way as well as many sights to explore off road, including some ancient eucalypt forests or old mining townships.
The Ocean Drive is a magnificent 4 wheel drive highway located in southern New South Wales. Jumping onto this road will take you through the surf coast villages of Wollongbar and Tweed as well as showcasing many stunning ocean views to admire along the way. The 4WD Ocean Drive also takes 4x4s on some thrilling offroad tracks lined by rainforest with plenty of gravel roads that cross over mountain ridges and valleys. Other exciting parts of this popular track includes steep cliff tops, creek crossings, deep gullies, sandy shorelines, ledgy plateaus and rocky outcrops that will ignite your inner adventurer on this outdoor expedition. You can even camp under the stars overlooking those beautiful beaches during the night time!
Ready to take on a challenge? New South Wales is home to the Barrington 4WD Trail, which is a point to point track that features some of the most exciting (and expert) 4x4 trails in the state. The road begins at Bulahdelah and offers one of Australia's most difficult courses, complete with plenty of steep climbs, declines and sharp bends. To drive this 4 wheel drive road, you must have moderate driving skills, although it can be made easier by using an auto locker and performance tyres. Remember, you’ll most likely encounter areas with very few escape options on steep rocky inclines, and they usually require drivers to walk their vehicle up or down them. Despite these notable points, the Barrington Trail is a beautiful, diverse stretch of mountains and forests with incredible views and is home to the oldest trees in Australia! Camping in your 4WD is at its best here. With the opportunity for overnight stays, you'll experience what it's like to be sleeping under the stars with this amazing adventure-filled trail.
The final destination on our list of popular spots to visit is the Barraba Track. It boasts an incredible experience that’ll make you feel like the only person on Earth. Why? Because there are strict vehicle limits, your chances of seeing another soul in this spectacular location are slim. Although, once you reach 1510 meters above sea level with a view over ancient mountains and valleys - it will be worth every second! For spectacular scenic views of remote volcanic mountains, the steep Barraba track offers mountain biking, walking, and a 4WD tour in Mount Kaputar National Park, near Narrabri.
When you’re looking for the perfect place to take your 4wd, there are so many places that offer a unique and unforgettable experience. We’ve picked out 5 of our favourite 4WD spots in NSW, where you can put your four-wheel-drive vehicle to the test and explore rugged terrain (not to mention some amazing natural attractions). ]]>Enthusiasts are always looking to go a little bit further, and their vehicles reflect that. With so many options available for off-roaders these days it's hard not to find something you like. If you just want to stick with the main roads though, a $2000 campervan will do - but if you're going feral (or have your heart set on remote destinations), there's only one way: 4WDs! Turns out what type of truck matters, after all, especially when compared to driving trucks or vans without four-wheel drive capability. Better still, Toyota Troopcarriers can be fitted out to ensure the most epic road trip of your life. One of the best things about travelling is that you can stop and really explore new places. You want to give yourself a good amount of time and do whatever it takes to map out your dreams. But be realistic! You're limited by time, so if you want thousands of kilometres apart might not be manageable with only one month on the road. Our key tips for your road trip discuss our essentials to pack as well as the best ways to fit out your troop carrier with a professional conversion, check out our
First, you need to decide on how long your road trip is going to be. A month or two might not give you enough time to go very far apart from each other - unless this is something that's more of a holiday than the kind of challenge some people are looking for! You should either plan your route in advance so it takes a few turns and twists, or find an area with a single destination if that's what you're after. Ideally, we recommend at least three months' worth of driving time for those who want to really explore Australia their way without feeling rushed!
If you do have less than one month but still would like to see plenty of our beautiful country, then packing lightweight is essential. However, you'll want enough water and food on your trip, especially because your troopy becomes your home on wheels. Our team here at Adventure Fitouts can install a water tank as the first port of call. In terms of water tanks, you may want to consider getting a larger tank installed. The reason for this is because the troop carrier does not have a lot of space when it comes to cargo so if your trip spans more than four days then you need as much storage room in that area as possible. For those who like their creature comforts, there's also plenty of options with installing a solar-powered 12V power system! This can be handy if you're out exploring and don't have access to any electricity points or nearby towns. As well as all these tips, remember one other important thing: safety first! Ensure your troopy has been serviced before heading off on an adventure so that everything will work smoothly during your time.
Maximising storage while also increase the usability and functionality all in a tidy and completely custom design. With Adventure Fitout’s U-Turn Fitout, there is the option of a smartly designed pull-out finger bed. You can comfortably sleep two while maintaining head room for sitting up, a generously sized storage drawer, plenty of small storage hatches for your odd bits and pieces. The best part? Everything is close at hand when it's needed most! And if you need to chill some cold drinks on the fly or prepare any kind of meal from scratch there's space enough here too with this clever combo fridge/sink that fits conveniently beside one side unit. The right side unit boasts room for 60L Engel fridge giving you all the room possible as well as an oven cooker top surface large enough to seat six people around. Do we need to add something about their kitchen draw upgade? All of Adventure Fitouts conversions come with a huge storage drawer, which can even be replaced with a kitchen drawer by adding their custom Kitchen Drawer Upgrade. Complete with a hinged benchtop, stepped down cooker location and two cutlery drawers, we have you covered!
Finding a free campsite is like finding buried treasure. There are hundreds of hidden gems just waiting for you to discover them and make use of their great camping potential! When you find a prime spot to park up for the evening, Adventure Fitout’s Weekend Warrior fitout will come to life and take your Troopy to a whole new level! With all of our storage and functionality upgrades, there are also plenty of small compartments around every corner to keep everything organised and contained while on the road. The right side unit features space for a 60L Engel fridge so that you can enjoy home cooking wherever you are! The best spots will give you the opportunity to relax in peace, while still being close enough that if anything should happen (troublesome wildlife or someone trying to steal your food) it won't be far off before help arrives. Stay away from sites by main roads as they can often have noise problems with construction trucks and other vehicles passing through at night time hours when sleep is most needed.
What are your top tips for taking a Toyota Troopcarrier on a road trip around Australia? And what's the best way to fit out your troop carrier with all of the necessary supplies and equipment needed for such an epic adventure? At Adventure Fitouts, we’re looking forward to seeing some photos from this once in a lifetime journey! Follow us on Instagram and Facebook to keep an eye out for our latest Troopy fitout.

]]>The van life movement has grown tremendously in the past few years, with more people than ever now choosing to live and travel full-time. However, while Instagram feeds may show a glamorous lifestyle free of responsibility or worry for many Van Lifers are struggling with day to day living on wheels. Van life is a way of living that has become increasingly popular in the past few years. For some, it's an escapist fantasy; for others, freedom and adventure await; but to those who are actually doing van life day-to-day with their family or friends, it just represents good old fashioned livin’ in harmony with oneself.
It’s worth noting that van living can be as simple as driving around until you find somewhere safe enough to park up for the night (or even less than 24 hours). It isn’t just about the vehicle you travel in, or where it takes you. It has nothing to do with how much time and money was invested into building your rig out. Van life is about making a change that will lead to living life on your own terms by taking control of what makes you feel alive - no matter whether this means travelling all over or staying around one area, full-time van dwelling for years at a stretch, part-time weekend trips through remote parts of our country (or even other continents!), meeting strangers from everywhere who are different than us but share commonalities we haven’t yet found in ourselves.
Van life is an adventure. You have to be open-minded and adventurous because there are no rules when living on wheels, you just need some creativity! It can also feel like a ton of fun if you allow yourself to go with the moment and learn how to make do without all your belongings. Some people only live this way part-time or temporarily for their travels but others have sold off all of their things in order to commit themselves to the lifestyle full-time.
So you're thinking of van life? Here are just some reasons why it might be right for you:
Let’s be honest, embracing a lifestyle that allows you to travel, work and live simultaneously sounds like a dream. This is probably why van life has been picking up popularity in recent years among millennials who want more freedom for less money. With owning your van, there are no rent or mortgage payments. Guess what? This means people can save their hard-earned dollars towards other goals like travelling around the world or start that business venture they’ve been considering without having to worry about homeownership costs getting too high. Some people choose not only as a matter of preference but also out of necessity; many professionals find themselves craving a new experience away from the traditional 9-5 workload or fantasize about exciting weekend getaways. Enter: "Vanlife."
What does it feel like to be free of the shackles of a house and an apartment? To have your entire life in one place, with all you need at hand. It's amazing! You know where everything is when you're on the open road - there are no mysteries left that could hinder your adventure or get underfoot while living outside society's norms. Your days are significantly more flexible; if something comes up unexpectedly, well then enjoy this time for as long as it lasts because these moments don't come around often enough anymore… Living in a van allows you to change your plans at the drop of a hat. Maybe you want to stay longer in an area that really fascinates and interests you, but if not then there is always something new waiting for discovery on the horizon. Travelling becomes more about spontaneity than it does money or time constraints as travelling with just what will fit into your home can make life so much less stressful!
One day you might wake up in luscious green bushland in Sydney, and another you’ll be overlooking white Queensland beaches. You find yourself exploring new cultures with people from all over the world for days or weeks at a time before settling into one place to make some roots of your own. It can be terrifying not knowing what's going to happen tomorrow but that also means there are endless possibilities waiting out there when you take steps towards uncertainty!
Van life can be a huge challenge, but it's also so rewarding! You spend most of your time with yourself and learn to live day by day. Your own happiness becomes more important than any materialistic items that you don't need anymore. While it takes an enormous amount of self-discipline for many people who are used to having everything at their fingertips, but the reward is worth every second spent in discomfort or uncertainty.
The van life movement allows you to make your favourite hobbies a more central part of the way that you live. Whether it is surfing all day, bushwalking or exploring for hours on end, spending time writing or working on your own business - whatever your interests are there's space in this lifestyle for them! If you live in a van and want to have free time, consider this. You'll need to spend lots of your precious minutes doing things like finding places to sleep, restocking your supplies and setting up camp - even though they're all important tasks that require attention too! Keep it in mind when deciding whether or not living out of a van is for you.
We hope this blog post has given you some insight into how living in your van can be an epic adventure. Whether it’s getting out of your comfort zone or focusing on what you love there is something for everyone to enjoy about embracing the fantasy of nomadic living.
]]>A common complaint from most van lovers is that their mattress feels too hard to sleep on, day in and day out. To remedy this problem, invest in a quality foam mattress, like our Premium Indoor Campervan Mattress or a soft airbed system which can be quickly inflated using only your van’s 12V power socket. The best part? Investing in a quality mattress will complement a solid bed frame and put it to good use!
We all know how important a good night's sleep is, especially when you’re on the road in your Hyundai iLoad. That’s why a sturdy bed frame can be the foundational difference between a regular van and one that is ready to take on the nomadic van life. For those who prefer a DIY, tool-free option, look no further than our Basic Bed Frame! If adventure sports and increased storage is on your checklist, then you might need to consider a frame that can handle more equipment, like our Night Rider Van Fitout w/ Single Drawer + Extending Fingered Bed.
Upgrading to twin and single drawer systems will provide efficient storage for all those bulky items that just don't fit anywhere else (hello, beach gear)! Adventure Fitouts specializes in incredibly durable and versatile storage drawers, which install seamlessly into almost any van model. The Storage King Van Fitout w/ Twin Drawers is a must-have for all van owners as the simple, durable storage mounts the drawers to your sidewalls and organizes everything from socks to cooking utensils with ease. The twin or single option will depend on how much space you have but no matter which size you choose, it will be a life-saving upgrade!
Remember to opt for some trusty roof vents for your road trip into Snowy Mountains to hit the slopes. Or, if you don’t have a heating or cooling system installed in your van (or the weather doesn't permit putting it to good use), then get an internal fan installation so that the inside temperature can be cool and comfortable. This is a minor upgrade that will make a major difference.
Your carpeting choice can make or break the deal when it comes to your van fitout. The right material and colour will let your decorations do the talking, while sneakily disguising any chance of scratches or spills on your floor. Another huge advantage is that throwing down a wetsuit or surfboard won't ruin the plywood, thanks to the carpet’s protective qualities! For this reason, marine carpeting is a prime choice when customizing your van at Adventure Fitouts. Ensuring that your floors stay insulated from the cold minimises the chance of cosmetic wear and tear to show, this upgrade will keep you comfortable and hassle-free on your trip from Sydney to Melbourne!
Installing blackout curtains and fly screens in your van will provide an element of privacy, as well as insulation and prevention from any creepy critters sneaking in your van unannounced! Curtains are a great way to upgrade both the aesthetic look and functionality of your van conversion, especially when installed by the professionals at Adventure Fitouts to ensure they last the distance. Flyscreens will also provide those irritating mozzies with an obstacle to buzz around, which is great for summer camping.
Board slots are a great addition to any custom van fitout. They keep boards safe, and also prevent them from being stolen! These days it's more common than ever for people to store their surfboard in the back of their van so they can take it with them on long trips - perfect when you don't want your gear getting wet out by sea spray. Guess what? At Adventure Fitouts, our Simple Surfer Van Fitout w/ Single Drawer + Board Slot is the perfect fitout option for almost any van, from Ford Transits to Volkswagen Caddys. Your dream set up is our relentless pursuit: game on…
Canopy awnings are the perfect solution for those travellers who love to spend their time in the great outdoors, rather than relaxing in their set up. They offer basic protection from sunlight or rain and can be easily set up within minutes (trust us, anyone can do it)! These portable cover-ups usually have manual roll out designs that provide shade on your van's side window (or any other location you would like). Another awesome feature? You can set up a separate sleeping quarter to host additional people - all you need is a blowup mattress and you’re good to go! Perfect for your road trip down from the Sunny Coast.
Why settle for one mood when you can have an entire spectrum of them? 12 Volt LED lights are the perfect way to do this, and it's easy too. All you need is a power source like solar panels or some 12V batteries. Any plug-in will work if there is enough storage capacity in your van conversion - whether you rock a Mercedes Sprinter or a Toyota Hiace, this is a must-have addition! Though these bulbs can be placed in various fixtures around the van, they do their best work when mounted on the ceiling. This placement not only saves space by not needing table lamps or traditional extra lighting sources, but it also maximizes power usage since LED light fixtures use 90% less energy than incandescent ones.
We bet that you know that electricity and battery power in your van is a top-tier upgrade by now. First of all, electricity is essential for nearly everything. Without it, we wouldn’t have lights, a fan, a fridge, device chargers or the ability to work remotely as digital nomads - any features that make your van a real home away from home. Exploring solar panel installation options can also allow you to explore and camp off-grid for as long as you want, absorbing the sun’s energy while you roam the roads. Adventure Fitouts offers full electrical installations by our subcontracted Auto Electrician.
If this post has been a helpful resource for making your van fitout more enjoyable on those long road trips, don't forget to share it with friends in need of some inspiration.
